Terracotta, linguistically from Italian and meaning "burned earth", is a collective name for ceramic goods, which are all made of high quality clay. Even if vases, bowls and other terracotta jars are provided with colored glazes and sold, most decorators and garden enthusiasts associate the term terracotta jars with a striking red-brown color that corresponds to the natural look of the material. High-class terracotta can be recognized in the specialist trade by the name Impruneta – the name for a small Italian town that is seen as the cradle of the manufacture of terracotta and whose clay occurrence dictates the striking shape and color of this earthenware. Terracotta in the Impruneta quality level is particularly valued for its high frost resistance and can therefore be kept in the garden or on the terrace even in winter. Other quality levels, such as Siena, are only suitable for use in warmer interiors, but can be purchased much more cheaply from specialist retailers. Occasionally, terracotta is still used as building ceramics, but the majority of industrial production is carried out as a series production for the horticultural and decoration sectors.
