Category: Color symbolism BLACK
Black is rather rare as a color of flowers and flowers, as this color scheme in the wild does not fulfill a useful function. Since most green plants with a colorful flowering want to attract insects and butterflies to give this pollen for their propagation, the shape of black flowers is hardly noticeable and proves to be counterproductive for plants of all kinds. It is therefore not surprising that many of the black flowers available today are special breeds that have adopted their current color touch only through crosses of various species or by fertilizers. The symbolic meaning of black flowers includes areas such as sadness and death, yet black flowers are rarely found in the funeral floristry, as at funerals or tombs deliberately a positive and lively color scheme is favored by bright colorful colors. Black flowers are therefore more likely to be attributed to mysticism, occultism or the modern gothic scene in which an open or even positive attitude to death is cultivated. Other, symbolic meanings of black flowers arise depending on species and genus, in the following some examples are shown.
The black Christmas rose is one of the special varieties, as a rule, the plant forms only white flowers, but is known for its black roots. With the designation as a Christmas rose, the religious reference of this flower is already created, in black varieties, the Christmas rose symbolizes the mourning for the deceased Savior or a dear, deceased person. In conjunction with other, more colorful flowers, the black Christmas rose can therefore be used in arrangements for a grave, but in this country is rarely encountered in this function. Somewhat more popular in this respect is the white Christmas rose, which bears the name Schneerose due to its usually pure white flower character.
The iris is occasionally found in nature in this color scheme, but has been bred specifically in the past decades in this color scheme. In many variants, which at first glance have a black appearance, it is actually a very deep violet, but this does not make any difference to the symbolic meaning of this variant. Since the blue and violet irises already express a person's feeling of being close to another person, the presentation of a deep purple or black iris strengthens this feeling. As is often the case with floral symbolism, the deeper the color of the petals, the darker the coloration of the petals, the more intense emotions and statements are, which is also true for the black iris and thus illustrates a close cohesion and deep feelings far from falling in love.

The black orchid in this country is not found in the wild and therefore has only a small symbolism, but behaves differently in other cultures and eras. Especially in the Asian region, the orchid is particularly appreciated in all colorings and with numerous, symbolic meanings, the black color stands here above all for vitality and youth. In many legends, the black orchids are even said to carry the key to eternal life, so that this color variant in Asian countries are given especially to young women or older ladies, who want to make a compliment about their age. Although this tradition is not widespread in Europe, the presentation of a black orchid with the explanation of this international symbolism will nevertheless create pleasant feelings for the recipient.
The black tulip is one of the few flowers that produces this color in its flowers even in the wild, but compared to other colors, the black is still rare here. Since tulips in all colors are combined with love and passion, this also applies to black tulips, so that here the negative or grieving aspect is not to be included. Compared to red or pink tulips as a sign of falling in love or love, black tulips tend to focus more on passion, sensuality and eroticism. As a gift of flowers, black tulips are therefore reserved for only a few couples who, for one another, first and foremost feel a sensual affection. This gesture is also understood in the floral symbolism of other European nations, on other continents the symbolism of the black tulip of passion quickly enters into the plane of meaning of the suffering, which makes it no longer a suitable gift for esteemed fellow human beings.
The columbine occurs in the wild in almost all colors of the visible color spectrum and can therefore inspire flower lovers in black or even more often black-violet variants. Over the centuries, the columbine has undergone an impressive transformation in its symbolic power and has been given new meanings in culture, mysticism and healing art. The columbine has been known for many epochs as a so-called witch-herb, which, for example, became an integral part of witches' albums and was thus always provided with a mystical and mysterious character. This character has been preserved for the black columbine to this day, making this flower in the mysticism of the 21st century a special example among the black flowers. Because of its use as an aphrodisiac, columbine was not a suitable gift flower for women in earlier centuries, but today this meaning is barely noticeable. In the Christian environment, the columbine with its lowered flower head were finally regarded as the mourning flower of the Virgin Mary, the sad and melancholy character is of course especially in the black version particularly strong expression.
