granules G as gardening The term granules in chemistry and geology basically means a composition of homogeneous or heterogeneous materials in the form of many individual particles. Both fine sand mixtures and coarse boulders fall under the original name granules, in floristry and horticulture, the name is also established for various mixtures of clay and other natural materials. Granules are produced by targeted firing of these base materials, which receive a very porous and coarse-grained structure through the treatment. It is able to absorb water and other nutrients like a sponge and store it for a few days. Many of the natural materials also contain their own nutrient mixtures and are therefore particularly suitable for various plants such as succulents or orchids. Compared to classical potting soil, where nutrients quickly settle on the floor or are removed from the garden via the soil, granules retain these nutrients and can supply the plant optimally for days. The use of granules over large areas is rather uncommon in modern horticulture, but they are used in classical flower pots or planters.
