gladiolus G as gardening The gladiolus is a popular ornamental plant and one of the most important representatives of the family of the hardy lily family, in many regions of Germany the term sword flower is used synonymously for numerous kinds of the gladiolus. The gladiolus is an evergreen plant, which can be found in fact on all continents and regional shows a variety of flowers in countless colors. In Germany, the gladiolus has been cultivated for decades and has become an important part of German floristry and horticulture. Especially purple and red varieties of gladiolus are particularly prized in this country, however, the breeding of gladioli is possible only for a short time of the year or in special greenhouses, as the plant is not frost-proof. Several hundred species of gladiolus are now known and cataloged around the globe, many of which are targeted and hybrids that have larger blooms than they do in nature, and are thus bred specifically for floristic use. In addition to their worldwide use as an ornamental plant, some species in different cultures around the globe also serve the consumption and represent an enrichment of various dishes.
