Gift flowers G as gardening The term poison flowers summarizes all flowers that have a toxic effect on humans or animals in whole or in individual parts of the flowers. Such flowers include substances that are needed by the plant for nutrient exchange or in birds and insects show no toxic effects, when consumed by humans or the pure skin contact already cause adverse reactions. Even though many poisonous flowers have an aesthetic appearance and could therefore be used as ornate elements in floristry, only very few poisonous flowers are used for this purpose. Above all, the accidental contact of humans and animals with these flowers in their own homes should be avoided, even if the effects of some poison flowers remain within manageable limits and thus do not cause permanent damage in humans. Among the best-known poisonous flowers, which are also to be discovered in Germany's free nature, include the cyclamen, the red foxglove, the lily of the valley and numerous tulip species. Not all of the mentioned plants develop their toxic effect on humans, however, dogs and cats can be damaged by eating. Anyone who owns pets as a garden lover should therefore check whether they are poisonous flowers for their own species before sowing their flowers.
