fire clay F like fall flowers Chamotte is a common name in everyday usage for different types of earthenware, which are characterized by their fire resistance. In technical circles, only an industrially produced stone mixture with an increased proportion of aluminum oxide may be referred to by the term chamotte, according to Baustofflehre, in horticulture and floristry, this strict separation, however, is not made. Chamotte has been known to mankind for a few centuries and was mainly used in the porcelain factory to designate stoneware, which did not show any significant changes in its structure even under the influence of heat. By industrial sintering, however, the material can now be processed, for example, by this factory process, the heat resistance of fireclay can be increased. In everyday life, chamotte has numerous applications, particularly popular is the refractory state in the lining of fireplaces and grills. In horticulture, too, chamotte is used to create decorative landscapes. In doing so, it becomes more familiar with the sturdy and optically natural character of this earthenware than with its fire resistance. In the vicinity of crematoria, fireclay bricks accompany the burning of the corpse in the combustion chamber, whereby an identification number of the deceased is applied to the stone in order to prevent a mix-up of the ashes. Finally, chamotte is used in rental apartments for heat storage and thus makes an energetic contribution.
