Calluna
Calluna is a generic name in botany, which summarizes a variety of species of heather. Many of these species find their natural habitat in Germany and other European countries, the most famous representative of the family is the Calluna vulgaris, also known as heather. Most species of Calluna lignify and take the form of smaller shrubs or bushes, which are typical for example for the landscape of the Lüneburg Heath. Despite their robust and wooden shape Calluna form colorful flowers, primarily in the colors yellow and pink. In horticulture and floristry species of Calluna are particularly popular in this country, as they prove to be easy to maintain and withstand adverse weather over the year. Especially for wild gardens and open spaces is the Calluna suitable, a cultivation in their own four walls, however, is unusual. In addition to their use as an ornamental plant, most species are appreciated in the field of beekeeping, as many of them have a very sweet nectar and can pass this on to bees. As a rule, products such as the well-known heather honey therefore originate from the nectar of Calluna and other flowering plants of central European heathland.
