Calla
Calla is the name for popular, in Germany, however, rarely encountered variants of indoor plants with large and colorful flowers. In Germany, the term calla lilies is also established for them, botanically speaking, the calla, however, does not belong to the lily family, but is a Aronstabgewächs. Originally the calla is native to numerous variants in Africa. For breeding outside its own four walls, it is therefore suitable in Germany only in very few species due to the climatic conditions. As usual with Aronstäben, the Calla forms a tuber for reproduction, compared to many other flower species it also has larger leaves. The seeds of Calla are spherical and formed from small berries in mostly orange or green color. Neither these berries nor other parts of the plant are suitable for consumption and have a slightly toxic effect. The most well-known calla species is the dragon root or the marsh calla, which usually grows only a larger ornamental leaf around the rod-shaped style of the plant and is often cultivated in this form as a houseplant. Due to its origins beyond Europe, Calla makes a higher demand on her care, which is why she is more likely to be found among advanced gardeners and flower lovers.
