Bast refers scientifically to a component of trees and other plants, the outer shape of which is lignified or wood-like. About the bast takes place the transport of nutrients in all parts of the plant. Throughout its trunk, the plant is therefore covered with bast, which can be found as an inner layer below the bark. In addition to the wood of numerous tree species, Bast is also used industrially and processed by its soft and flexible shape to a durable fabric. This can be bought not only in the form of mats in stores, which serve as a support or support surface, but also in the form of strings, which are occasionally used in the field of floristics. Compared to plastic tapes and packaging materials, raffia cords are a very eco-friendly alternative, which is why it is often used in the packaging of bouquets and other plants. However, compared to plastic tapes, Bast is less flexible so that the fabric can break apart quickly – careful handling of bast is therefore advisable in any case.
